This is because they live in the here & now, it is important to remember that you need to keep the attention on you. Here are a few ideas to try- When leaving the home or car it is very important to go before your dog. In your dog's eyes this is know as alpha behaviour & he will understand. If you let him walk ahead you are letting him think he is the decision maker. This rule also applies to going through doors & gates whilst out walking etc. Just imagine taking a hot drink from the kitchen to go watch TV & along comes Buster & charges past - does this sound familiar?
- When it's feeding time make him wait for a few moments. By this I mean put the food in his bowl & when placing in the stand, on the floor or feeding mat give him a command of wait or leave.- Keep some areas of the home or car out of bounds, for example he is not allowed on your bed, the sofa or seats in the car.- Do not let him initiate play. If he nudges or paws for attention & you respond he is in charge. Play is a very important part of the relationship with your dog & helps to form a strong bond, but it is important that it is done on your terms when you are ready.
- Now this is a hard one! When you return home don't make a big fuss & do the "ooh hello buddy, you, Dog Tip Products, are a Gooood boy routine" yes I know I said it was difficult I'm sure dog lovers everywhere have done this at some time! Just take a few moments (say 3 minutes) quietly take off your coat, put the kettle on or make a cup of tea. When he is calm & sitting quietly then gently stroke him. In a dog's world the alpha dog ignores everyone, relaxes, maybe eats & then only interacts when he is ready.
